I am sure that my colleague Bill Frazer is well aware of David
Crossley's MA in Historical Archaeology. David also contributes to
undergraduate teaching in our department. There are a number of people in Sheffie
ld
who would happpily call themselves historical archaeologists.
I have been conducting research on 18th and 19th century settlements
in the Outer Hebrides, of Scotland examining the archaeology of the Highland Cl
earances.
I also have a related project which is attempting to explore such things as the
relationship between material culture and ethnicity/social memory by
tracing emigrants to their new homes in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. This is call
ed the
Highland settler Project. Preliminary fieldwork started on this
project last September.
