I am looking for information on archaeological investigations of
soft-brick manufacturing sites. I am researching a 20th century softbrick
plant in Pennsylvania and I am exchanging info with Michelle Terrell, who
is collecting similar info for an investigation of a series of
nineteenth century brick clamps in Iowa. I have specific and general
questions regarding archaeological studies of brickmaking plants from
both centuries, and I have found the National Archaeological Database of
little specific help in searching the grey literature. Does anyone know
of any projects/reports/publications dealing with aspects of brickmaking
such as -

How is the site laid out? Was a site map produced? Is the manufacturing
process given a spatial description?

Has anyone encorporated oral history into studies of brickmaking?

Has anyone recorded a brickmaking site where they were able to record or
reconstruct what types of machinery was used? Perhaps through footprints
or Sanborn maps?

I am interested in compiling a list of studies that discuss brickmaking
and the industrial landscape.

Please respond to list, or in personal email ([log in to unmask])
I will try to compile all of the references and replies with a final
post when the thread ends.

Thank you

Tim
