Representing Native American History
A special issue of The Public Historian
Co-editors:
Clara Sue Kidwell, National Museum of the American Indian,
and
Ann Plane, University of California, Santa Barbara
The Public Historian is planning a special issue focusing on the
intellectual, ethical, and practical issues surrounding the representation
of Native American history.
We welcome proposals on these and related topics:
* the role of historical research and public historians in federal
recognition and land claims cases
* NAGPRA and the repatriation of sacred objects
* the preservation of sacred and historic native sites
* the representation of native history in museums, films, CD-ROMs and
other public media
* history education in native communities
* community-based public history programs
* building a historical context for the interpretation of native art
* public history and native history in either North American or
global contexts
* ethics and the public history of native communities
* recent trends in American Indian history of particular interest to
public historians
Proposal deadline: May 15, 1995. Authors will be notified by June 1 whether
their proposals have been accepted.
Article deadline: December 1, 1995
