Subject: re:your agenda against archaeology

Robert Johnson:

You and I have met before in the halls of Hale Bldg, CU. Just to let
you know who is talking to you, I am a PhD student there as well as
an archaeologist working now in St. Louis.

Yesterday while plowing through my e-mail trash (rather
appropriately) I happened upon a series of messages that you sent to
HISTARCH list on 11/12 - 11/16.

I must take issue with the things you said about Payson Sheets. If
you disagree with the things that Payson Sheets does, or with the
fact that he is an archaeologist, that is your right, your own
business. In observing the content of your messages, I have decided
that they are slanderous, no matter what the context of the arguments
was. Judging from the responses of list participants, I am sure they
agree.

It is totally irresponsible and unprofessional to state what you
consider are ethical and moral problems on the internet list, and
then outright name Payson Sheets. Perhaps he does do archaeology in
a country that wages war on its own people. However, your education
right now is probably funded by a government that does similar
injustices.

The fact is, you don't have all the facts. But the biggest injustice
here is that you would print slanderous, assinine material on an
INTERNET LIST designed for discussion. This goes for anybody, and
not just Payson Sheets. If you notice, I have written you directly,
and not the list.

However, I happen to know the man and he is not deserving of the kind
of treatment which you give him. If you have such ethical problems
with his work, it should be stated very generally and much less
accusational.

This kind of tact may be difficult for you, as I suspect it is.
However, since you are pontificating on a worldwide list, you had
better exercise tact. Did you think no one out there knew Payson?
I suppose you really don't care, but it is time for you to exercise
some real professional care in stating your OPINIONS. An opinion is
like an _______; everbody has one. Some people just are like very
large opinions.

If you wish to respond to me, I encourage you to do so. Does Payson
know about these messages? What other campaigns of terror are you
dragging down the halls of Hale?
