Ball State University 1997 Underwater Archaeology Fieldschool

What: The Fourth Annual Ball State University Underwater Archaeology
Fieldschool will be conducted First Summer Session of 1997.
The fieldschool carries 6 semester credit hours of Anthropology
and is open to undergraduate and graduate students. Participants
must be certified divers. The enrollment is limited to 12 students.
Where: Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, USA and Grand Cayman Island,
British West Indies.
When: May 19 - June 20, 1997. The first two weeks will take place in
central Indiana at aprivately owned dive site and involve learning
small boat handling, instrument survey, mapping, recording, excavation
techniques, airlift, induction dredge, remote sensing survey,
underwater photography and video. This will be followed by
15 days on Grand Cayman Island continuing a project of documentation,
oral history, mapping, videorecording and photographing the remains
of a wooden, three masted schooner, wrecked on the north shore of the
Island. Upon return, a project diary and journal of how-to-do-it
techniques will be due June 20. Graduate students will prepare a
research paper during the course for submission at the same time.

The application should consist of a letter requesting participation
with details of your background and experience. A $100 deposit
must accompany the application. Applications will be accepted at
any time but must be received before February 15, 1997. Applicants
will be notified of their acceptance no later than March 1, 1997.
Deposits will be returned to unsuccessful applicants. Once
accepted into the program, deposits are not refundable.
Cost: Fieldschool cost will be $1935 plus tuition. Included is airfare,
local transportation, housing, board, dive gear (except mask, fins
and snorkle) for those who do not have their own, insurance and
all supplies. Recreational diving expenses are not included
although dive gear will be available for that purpose at no cost.
Tuition is estimated at $618 for 6 hours undergraduate credit and
$654 for six hours graduate credit. No additional charge is made
for out-of-state students. An application fee of $15 is charged for
students who have not previously attended Ball State University. The
deposit will be credited against the $1935 cost. The remaining
$1835 will be due prior to the beginning of class. Tuition payment
will be due at the time of registration or as arranged with the
Bursar's Office.
