We are currently analyzing a large assemblage of fishbone excavated from
an early historic site in Eastern Iowa. The small feature (ca. 1x1.5 m)
consisted of a large amount of whole handmade soft mud brick, layers of
ash, some broken ceramics, seed beads, charcoal and a large amount of
fish bone. Almost no other animal bone was recovered from the feature. We
are tentatively interpreting the feature as a smokehouse and archival and
artifactual information indicate the feature most likely dates to ca.
1837-1840s. My question is does anyone else have large assemblages of
fish from early-mid ninteenth century historic farmsteads? The site is
located on high prairie between the Maquoketa River and the North Fork of
the Maquoketa River but is almost four miles from the North Fork which is
the nearer river. The fish all appear to be suckers that have been
partially processed (heads cut off). I would appreciate any data that
anyone might have. I am looking for comparative subsistence information
on the amount of fish usage during this period. Thank you for any help
that you can provide.
