Linn: One of the first railroads, if not the first railroad built west of
the Appalachian Mountains was constructed between Lexington, Kentucky
("Athens of the West") and Frankfort, Kentucky. The "ties" were constructed
of cut limestone sills, placed end to end, forming two parallel platforms on
which steel rails were attached. In effect, there were no "ties" between
these sills. One of these sills is on display on the University of Kentucky
campus.
Hope this helps.
