know I may live to regret asking this, but this 'cookie' thing, what is
it, wh
at does it do,
and how do I know if I've got one? Why 'cookie' anyway? Or is it a simple
hoax
designed to identify gullible people who will believe anything they read!
A cookie is a small software program that is slipped into your
computer when you connect to a web page that uses them. It stays on your
computer and sends information back to the person who sent it whenever your
computer is on. It does not give any warning that it is doing this and the
only limits on what it will send to the address it is hooked to are in its
programming. Some cookies keep track of every web page you visit and
broadcast that information to the person who slipped you the cookie.
The way to find out if you have one is to go to the cookie file in
windows and look at what is there. To stop people from putting them on
your computer go to options and set your web browser to alert you before
accepting cookies. You can then simply refuse them. You may get up to 9
cookies from one web page and have to refuse each one. One theory on why
they are called cookies is the old saying - you did what for how many
cookies? Your computer does what for a cookie?
