Actually, the term "magic cookie" comes from the 1960's when it was used to
mean a cookie (or other baked good) with marijuana in it. (oooh, I dated
myself!)
Most cookies store information about your e-mail address so that they (the
webmasters) can get an idea of whom is using their sites.
Also, computer techies are notorious for their munching habits. At the
beginning of the Internet/networked computers, someone came up with a
program for telling how many Cokes were in a cetain soda machine at a
specific university. This has spread, and the results can be found if you
look in Yahoo! under "objects connected to the Internet".
