A specific call for papers will be issued in 1997 after the session and workshop
 proposals
are finalized.

The 14th International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences, co
inciding
with the centenary of the Torres Straits Expedition of 1898, has three specific
purposes: to
reflect on the accomplishments and lessons of the past one hundred years of anth
ropology; to
examine the challenges of anthropology in the next millennium; and to explore ho
w to
incorporate the discipline's perspectives in public policy implementation, knowl
edge
application, education, information dissemination and applied areas.
 
The Congress will begin with the key note address and the Mario Zamora public le
cture on
the hundred years of Anthropology. During the Congress forty concurrent symposia
 and
scientific sessions will be held to assess the state of arts in World Anthropolo
gy and to define
urgent issues and challenges of the 21st century. The second plenary session wil
l explore
possible directions and roles of anthropology and anthropologists in solving hum
an problems
in the next millennium. This Congress will be future- and action-oriented. The I
UAES
particularly welcomes proposals for symposia, scientific sessions and paper abst
racts which
will discuss strategies for improving the global human community.
 
Field trips and other activities will be organized to allow participants to expe
rience the
charming Williamsburg area.  More information will be made public in the second
call for papers.
