The Oklahoma Historical Society, pending approval, anticipates an opening for a
Curator 1 with archaeological research and/or collections management experience
at the Fort Towson Historic Site in southeastern Oklahoma.  Annual salary for th
is position is $21,249.00 with full state benefits.
 
The Curator 1 at Fort Towson will be responsible for management of existing arch
aeological collections from excavations at the site of Fort Towson (1824-1854) a
nd collections that will result f rom the planned excavations at the nearby town
site of Doaksville (ca. 1830 to the late 19th century).  Excavations at Doaksvil
le will begin this summer and continue through 1997. The Curator I will be expec
ted to participate in these excavations, and to be involved in the research and
writing that will result.  Other duties will include assistance with the operati
on of the Fort Towson and Doaksville sites under supervision of the site manager
.
 
Requirements: Completion of the curriculum requirements for a baccalaureate degr
ee in history, anthropology, or a closely related field and one (1) year of cura
torial experience in a historical or natural history museum; OR an equivalent co
mbination of education and experience, substituting one (1) additional year of q
ualifying experience for each year of the required education; OR substituting a
master's degree in one of the above fields for the required experience provided
it included at least one (1) course in museum studies or museum administration.
