The Roanoke Colonies Research Office at East Carolina University is in
the process of putting together a bibliographic checklist of primary and
secondary materials connected with the exploration and colonization of
Roanoke Island in the 1580s and its cultural milieu. The Roanoke Island
colonization ventures were organized and sponsored by Sir Walter
Raleigh, including the famous "Lost Colony" of 1587.
The checklist will cover not only the specific expeditions themselves,
but the Native American cultures of eastern North Carolina that were
encountered, the environment of the region, significant European events
connected with the colonization efforts, literary works based on the
events, and so forth. Materials will be from a broad range of fields,
including anthropology, archeology, biology, history, geography,
geology, literature, and any others that may be applicable.
The checklist is a first stage. After assembling the checklist,
the Roanoke Colonies Research Office plans on turning the
checklist into an annotated bibliography. The bibliography
project is to be available in both printed format and
electronically at each stage. John Sallient of IEAHCNET (the
Institute of Early American History and Culture's electronic
bulletin board) has offered space on the IEAHCNET Gopher for the
checklist when it is finished.
We are asking for help in this endeavor. Any references you might
have would be appreciated. Though we are searching all of the
major sources (American History and Life, Humanities Index, Social
Science Index, MLA Bibliography, etc., as well as the
bibliographies of major works on the subject), it is still easy to
miss references. This is especially true because of the broad
range of subjects covered.
If you have references for books, journal articles, reports,
newspaper pieces, etc., that we should include, please send them
to me either via e-mail or at the address below. Both obscure and
what seem like obvious references are appreciated--we would rather
get repeated notice of the same work than miss one altogether.
Thank you for your help.
