I have a copy of the Macbeth Munsell Color catalogue in front of me as I
write this. The description of the "Munsell Soil Color Charts" (Product no.
50216) is as follows,
"Developed with the the U.S. Soil Conservation Service for classifying the
color of soils." A phone call to the company indicates that the current list
price is $99.00. Supplementary charts, available for $15.00 each, include
Hues 5R "used for tropical and semi-tropical soils" (No. 50221) and Hue 7.5R,
"used for Australian and Southeast Asian soils" (No. 50222). This should
resove the issue of what these charts are intended for.
If $99.00 seems too expensive, those who are interested can obtain Item
No.60040, "USDA French Fry Standards," whose "printed color ranges meet
specifications set by USDA for frozen french fry potatoes" for $80.00, or
Item No. 90056, "USDA Canned Ripe Olives Color Standards" which one would
hope does the same thing for canned ripe olives, for $50.00. Diehard
trivia-buffs take note! The latter are washable!
