To Mike Jacobs and those interested in WPA projects which employed African-Ameri
can
women, I recommend an excellent article:

     Classen, Cheryl
1993 "Black and White Women at Irene Mound." Southeastern
               Archaeology 12(2): 137-147.

Also,

White, Nancy M., Rochelle A. Marrinan and Hester A. Davis
1994 "Early Women in Southeastern Archaeology: A Preliminary
Report on Ongoing Research." In Women in Archaeology,
edited by Cheryl Claassen, 96-109. Philadelphia:
                University of Pennsylvania Press.

As an Archaeological/Museum Technician working for the NPS Southeast
Archeological Center (SEAC), I have recently seen the original
photographs of the excavations of Irene Mound by African-American women.

SEAC houses this collection and many other photographs,
documentation and artifacts from WPA projects, NPS projects and other
projects from the southeast.

Primary research can be conducted at SEAC. The address is:

           National Park Service
           Southeast Archeological Center
           P.O. Box 2416
           Tallahassee, Florida
           32316 (904) 561-9106

Good luck in your research!
