     Excavation below the floor of a 1756 Lutheran church in Halifax this
     past summer uncovered a number of burials that were apparently exhumed
     prior to the construction of the church and reburied beneath the floor.
      The building, known as the Dutch Church because it was used by German
     (Deutsche) immigrants, has remained largely unaltered since
     construction and is undergoing stabilization and repairs.  Since
     Halifax was only founded in 1749, the graves must have been known and
     the unearthing of the remains would not have been unexpected.
 
     The church is under the direction and protection of St. George's
     Anglican church, which is itself undergoing major restoration following
     a disasterous fire.  The excavation under the Dutch Church was directed
