Flues were generally not used at that time in most farm
houses, and maybe not in any houses, in the U.S. generally.
There may have been exceptions: others may know better.
The hearth of one cooking fireplace with a stone foundation
that I investigated is about 2 meters by 1 meter and is
made of bricks over a clay base. Beneath the bricks we
found spoon handles and spoons, along with some shards of
pottery. This fireplace is at site 18FR696 which is a farm
house built in 1818.
