All I can say is, stick to your first choice for a profession, take all the
serious advice on this list, and definitely find a second job to support
yourself just in case.
 
This is from a graduate student in medical genetics who chickened out of
archaeology on financial and job-prospect grounds, and is now reduced to
voyerism of the archaeology e-mail lists.
