And now for something completely different......
Historic archaeolgists in Fairbanks are searching for references to help
date Jersey Butter cans. While efforts toward dating Hills Bros. coffee
cans have met with some success around here (by the varying designs,
letterings, and positionings thereof), we are gaining little ground
with our Jersey Butter cans. The can we are refering to is 1 lb.,
mostly yellowish all over (how's that for vague?), with a side profile
of a cow amongst the advertising lettering. We seem to have found 2
types thus far: an earlier example (possibly/probably from 1910-20)
which illustrates the animal standing clearly on a grassy field with
a backdrop of mountains, and a second and later can (poss. 1920s)
without the above-mentioned grass and mountains.
Any takers out there? References? Any and all would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks from central interior Alaska.
