A good and simple reference to their use is as follows:

You might also be interested in my article in that same publication:

Placement of the swarm hives is also important. I recommend placing
them a couple hundred meters upwind (for prevailing winds in your area)
from your colonies -- head height or higher, with the entrance facing
mostly downwind.
