Subject: Pot excavation
"DOn't scoff at something just because its seems new or even
difficult."
I am not, sir. I am scoffing at the application of computers and
video recorders to the excavation of a single pot not because I
am a Luddite but because it is ludicrous, and an excellent
example of the way that a blind and thoughtless devotion to
technology for technology's sake deadens the critical faculties.
I have nothing against computers or video cameras -- I like them,
I use them (well, the computers at any rate), and I think they
have a place in archaeology. But when those who lack a knowledge
of fundamental excavation techniques seek refuge in technological
toys, I fear for the pot, I fear for the site, and I fear for the
future of the discipline.
Yours sincerely,
Mark Landon
