Better late than never!
 
Panati, Charles. EXTRAORDINARY ORIGINS OF EVERYDAY THINGS (New York: Harper
& Row, 1987). ISBN 0-06-096093-0 (paper). Pages 334-336. Panati mentions
that a condom made of vulcanized rubber appeared in the 1870s, but the
thinner modern latex rubber was not introduced until the 1930s.
