Industrial Archaeology is generally considered a subset of historical
archaeology. The Society for Industrial Archaeology, if I remember
correctly, has been around since the late 1960's or early 1970's. It
is usually concerned with production or raw material extraction sites
from the industrial revolution onwards. Even field recording these
sites is a major production due to their size, complexity, and narrow
focus. I recorded a manganese mill site in southern Arkansas from
the World War II era and was amazed at how little information I was
able to get. All of the states geological publication center on the
mineral resources NOT the processing sites which are often only
mentioned in passing.

What is the difference between industrial archaeology and historical
archaeology? Is one a subset of the other? What are the current trends in
industrial archaeology?
