Call Pat Garrow @ (404) 270-1192. He has done some work on colonial
tanneries along the Carolina coast. I can't recall the title of the
report but from what he told me it was a very interesting site. I
believe a hurricane effectively covered the site overnight with hides
still in vats, etc....
For information on a early twentieth-century commercial tannery
contact the City Hall of Buford, Georgia. The Tandy Leather company
operated a large tannery in this town for most of the
twentieth-century. It was one of the few industries that prospered
during the Depression and was a major employer for the region. I
believe the tannery was finally closed in the early 1980's, but the
buildings are still standing and might contain much of the equipment.
I hope this can be of some help.
Tad Britt
