Check out Hume's Martin's Hundred and Deetz's Flowerdew Hundred for early
(1600s) pits used as short term living quarters, possibly covered with canvas
or somesuch temporary roofing. There are northern European precedences for this
type of structure, Dutch, English. Sorry I don't have anything more specific at
hand.
