In the traditional lead-glazed pottery industry of the North Carolina
Piedmont, there is a different type of "tobacco spit" glaze, named after
the color, rather than the production technique. I don't think it's made
much anymore, but if you can find books or catalogues of Jugtown (North
Carolina) pottery, especially from the 1960's and earlier, you might see
some examples of this red-brown lead glaze. Illustrations of pots by Ben
Owen sometimes show examples of the Jugtown tobacco spit variety.
