The tobacco spit glaze is known as mochaware. It is a combination of tobacco
juice and human urine, and was used primarily by the British to glaze
ironstone. The use of these ingredients producs a curious dendritic pattern on
the pottery. We have been finding a lot of it at the Presidio of San Diego dig
(where I tend to call it "pissware").
