Hi all...
I'll be cross-posting this to a couple of lists..so my apologies in
advance. Question:
How do you cite, in a paper, an article taken off the Web?
I asked this question about two years ago and received a lot
of wonderful advice, including an article on netiquette.
Basically most people who responded agreed that it is
proper use of information to cite internet communications
(references in science articles are basically little
more than "hearsay" in a legal sense anyway.)
There was general agreement that when one cites an internet
communication, one should:
1) Give full and proper credit to the author of the
communication, using their complete name (and place of
employment if it is available). This may mean having to
recontact the listserver to obtain complete information,
2) Give full credit to the discussion group through which
the message was sent - in such detail as to permit a
reader to contact the discussion listserver if they wished,
3) Give the name of the subject heading under which the
message was sent,
4) Give the date the message was sent, and
5) Be totally accurate, and faithful to the intent of the
information, in your use of the information as you would
be with any supporting documentation in a science article.
