I'm very familiar with post-in-ground, earth-fast construction in the east
and south - the French version, however, is new to me. My cursory check of
the local grey literature indicates that there aren't any others in the area
(other than old Mobile), and I was actually trying to take a short-cut by
canvassing you folks --
The posts may well be repair, but as you said, they would be hard to place
after the building was in place. No rocks on the bottom, although I did find
large stones in the bottom of post-holes in Virginia. It's likely that the
posts were cut off at top-of-sill level, which would explain their presence
on the interior of the sill.
