Faunal remains of all sorts of riverine, marine and anadromous fish
are quite common in most Chesapeake sites. We have a number of
collections of floatation samples and other faunal collections with
shad/herring bones here at Virginia Commonwealth U. The Curles
Plantation middens and trash pits have certainly produced their fair
share, along with lots of sturgeon plates, etc. The Curles slave
quarters was especially rich in fish remains (mid-18th c.) and I
believe herring are well represented in the assemblage. I might add
that prehistoric and protohistoric Native American middens along the
James also have produced herring bones. What info in particular are
you looking for?
