Subject: Yet another Old F***t
I remember back in the mid-70's when I first discovered statistics
and THE COMPUTER (punch cards and all of that), I felt that I had found
the answer to all the problems of archaeological analysis. After
several more courses in statistics and quantitative geography, plus
being reminded of the programmers prime directive "garbage in, garbage
out", I realized I hadn't. I also remember working with SYMAP, which
must now be regarded as a kind of "paleolithic GIS". [Like another
contributor, I remember encountering SYMAP plots which, although
visually striking, had parameters so broad as to be virtually
meaningless].
I've never been one to reject, outright, new technologies.
Rather, I suspect, like other Old F***ts, I just like to wait to see
whats there after the dust settles, before embracing anything
wholeheartedly.
Tom
[BTW, it's not the tool, but the skill of the wielder which produces
results]
