There was a session (workshop) presented at the 1995 SAA conference in
Minneapolis entitled, "The Health and Safety of Archaeology: Or What You
Don't Know CAN Hurt You." A follow up article was printed in the Summer,
1995 Issue of "Federal Archaeology" (available from the National Park Service
Archeological Assistance Division, P.O. Box 37127, Washington, DC
20013-7127.)

For those interested, a workshop is planned for the 1996 SAA conference in
New Orleans. This year the workshop will focus exclusively on disease,
health risks, and OSHA requirements. OSHA doesn't do training themselves.
The presenter on OSHA Standards in New Orleans is the safety officer from
Boh Brothers Construction Co. He is certified to do "Competent Person"
training and will be giving a "crash" course for workshop participants.

The second presenter is T. Michael Fink of the Department of Health Services
in Phoenix, AZ. He has written extensivly on field related disease. The
final presentation will be from the contracting agency perspective, including
covering the added cost of being safe.

Only 7 people attended the 1995 workshop out of over 2,000 people attending
the SAA's. The people who attended, gave an overwhelmingly positive review
of the workshop. They were, however, disgusted with the low turn out.
