Pat,
If you haven't seen it, you might check "The Emilio Collection of
Military Buttons" (by Luis Fenollosa Emilio, published by the Essex
Institute, Salem, Mass., 1911) for additional examples of brass
buttons with the markings you note.
For buttons with "Treble Gilt", see numbers 124 (US Marines 1835-1839), 125
(US Navy 1820-1826), and 132 (US Navy 1830-1835, attributed to
English origin) in Emilio. Also a civilian button (c. 1800-1810?),
number 1230 ("Treble gilt, standard"). Number 1270 (1860-1870) -
"Treble gilt." A variety of additional buttons are "treble plated".
"Orange Colour" - number 1191 US State Department button, 1820-1840.
# 1444, attributed to England (1810-1830?) has a reverse which reads
"Extra rich orange colour".
Number 1267 (1816-1820?), from NYC - "Treble gilt orange." Also
#1268 (1816-1820?).
I also recall seeing "treble gilt" and "orange" marked buttons in
some Parks Canada reports - perhaps the report on Fort Lennox,
Quebec, by Norm Barka (1978)? There must be plenty of additional
examples out there.
