Subject: Query regarding upcoming SAA symposium
To: Multiple recipients of list ARCH-L <[log in to unmask]>

A couple of us are planning an SAA symposium for the 1995 meetings
that examines the relationship between technological style, social
boundaries, and the archaeological record. The symposium examines
theoretical and methodological aspects of technological style vis-a-
vis social boundaries, using a variety of case studies and
theoretical discussions. Several edited volumes have already been
published in prehistoric and historic archaeology that explore
material reflections of "ethnicity" in the archaeological
record, so participants for this symposium should delve more
deeply into the topic than to provide trait list distributions.
Theoretical contributions, particularly those that recognize and
synthesize previous research on the topic from a cultural
technological perspective, are strongly desired. Both archaeological
(historical and prehistoric) and ethnoarchaeological studies
may be appropriate.

If the general topic of technological style and social boundaries
interests any members of the ARCH- L list, contact Miriam Stark until
mid-August at the Department of Anthropology, University of Arizona
(Tucson) by email or by snail-mail. The symposium roster will be
finalized by the third week of August.
