I've found ammonia works well.  I've even used "smelling salts" poppers
out of my first aid kit as a topical application to stings, with fairly
good results.  (I'm one of those radical first aid types who used to
volunteer for the Red Cross and still carries a *toolbox* full of first
aid supplies!)
