leaning genetics will try to keep it going for as long as possible.

We have the same thing here - native black bees will shut down in July if the is a dearth of forage, but the yellow Italians just keep converting food into brood until they starve - or the beekeeper runs out of money to feed them!

A clear example of local adaptation?
