Ever since Darwin, it has been clear that human directed breeding taps into the same mechanisms as natural selection. The main differences:  1. being being able to select _for_ traits whereas natural selection eliminates traits; 2. vastly speeding up the process. Of course there is the problem of pleiotropy where traits are tied to others and sometimes deleterious traits are inadvertently strengthened. But I find it odd that people think that natural selection will somehow achieve results that selective breed has failed to do. I think there are other factors involved that are being overlooked or dismissed.
