Adolfo Perez Pineiros, director of the Center for Apicultural Reseach, La Habana, states in an article from 2017 in Agroecologia that varro mites arrived in Cuba in 1996. Three main approaches were instituted in response: a) Removal of honey at the bee yards and no movement of comb, bees between apiaries, and destruction of colonies showing any kind of disease, b) Use of colonies proven to be resistant or tolerant towards varroa as the base for new colonies, c) No use of any "treatments or chemical controls". He further states that colonies are selected for hygienic behavior and productivity and claims that after 21 years there is a stable situation where colonies remain healthy and without signs of disease.
