I feel your frustration.  I run double deeps but like to make some comb
honey too.  I have taken Bob Darrell's suggestion of putting a comb honey
frame in the center of most honey supers and I get about 70% success.  As
you well know some colonies are good comb builders and some are not.  Some,
I would say most also will go through an excluder but some will not and
absolutely pack the brood nest with honey.  Bob's technique allows you to
skip the excluders.  However, I am not sure if you could place a Ross Round
frame in the middle of a standard honey super.
