That is not really a mystery. Everyone is looking at something
different. Different regions, different management, different hive
config, different bees...
IMO, what counts most is the strength and health of the colony going in.
I posted somewhere in the archives how a beekeeper died and his friend,
an inspector, did not have time or wraps and just went out and stacked
every other hive on its neighbour.
100% survival in an area where everyone wraps and still suffers losses.
I have had similar experiences with two queen colonies and combined
colonies.
I could spell out several reasons why this works but will leave it there.
