I read the article https://sciendo.com/article/10.2478/jas-2013-0016
And as an electrical engineer in the building construction industry, I’ve hung around with enough mechanical (HVAC) engineers to learn a few things. Insulation is important but it depends on where and the season.
In colder seasons, attic/roof/ceiling/top insulation is the most important for climate control. However, in warm seasons, wall/vertical insulation is more important for climate control. Old residential design led to taller rooms and newer designs can include the addition of a whole house attic fans.
The authors determined the insulated cover box (sides and top) style benefited the Carniolians the best compared to the other modifications they made.
Knowing how hot a shed can get in the summer, I suspect side insulation would be optimal while leaving the top uninsulated. Thus creating a chimney effect that the bees can control. In a winter then add top insulation to the existing side insulation from the summer. Although exterior side insulation with a double deep would be a nuisance. Anyone try only side insulation in the summer?
