I insulate the top of my hives with old carpet that someone had dumped at the roadside. I don't insulate the sides because I once put my hands inside a hive on a cold winter day and found that the sunny side was much warmer. This added warmth will give bees on the outside of the cluster the ability to venture onto comb with more honey so they can make a round of sandwiches for their sisters.
