Cool paper exploring the impact of brood breaks on varroa growth (and also on the behavioral trait of uncapping / recapping).

The key take-away IMHO:

'The interruption of brood rearing clearly alters the reproductive success of mites, the recapping frequency and the brood infestation on colony level. It is therefore not only important for the survival of honeybee colonies, but may also interfere with measurements of resistance parameters [recapping].'
