This question is addressed in: Jennifer A Berry & Keith S Delaplane (2001) Effects of comb age on honey bee colony growth and brood survivorship.
They found that new comb resulted in more egg laying, more brood etc. but that brood survival was higher in old comb. This is not directly related to queen rearing but bolsters the idea that using old comb for grafting is not harmful and it's a lot easier to graft with dark combs. If the queen is confined to a single comb, she should lay it up whether it's dark or light.
