Twenty years ago, I wrote a brief tutorial for Bee Culture magazine on how to use Growing-Degree-Days in beekeeping.

But a steadily warming climate has made the technique far less reliable since 2010 in the mid-Atlantic states along the east coast of the USA, as it is rare to get the good solid freeze in winter that allows one to start counting.  So while plants may suffer minor setbacks due to successive "frosts" in Jan, Feb, and March, one simply does not know for certain when to START counting GDDs.

One presumes that the further south one keeps bees, the less accurate GDDs are these days.

They certainly work great in greenhouses. They are the primary reason why there are so many roses available right now, all in excellent condition for Valentine's Day, (or as my wife prefers to call it "MLB Pitchers and Catchers start spring training day", as she is a diehard Mets fan).
