Here's a mainstream media article (sadly behind a paywall) about why
"saving the [honey]bees" never made sense but became "a thing" anyway:

I think it mostly gets it right (aside from the oft-repeated
and not-so-proven statement that "Honeybees are responsible for
pollinating roughly every third bite Americans eat").  I'd be
curious to know what other on this link think about it.
