V. Mites are not the major cause of current and future honeybee demise, to me, because we cannot keep bees in ecological isolation.  The bigger problem facing all pollinators is the industrialized food system now practiced nearly in all advanced countries.

To maximize the yields, for instance, farms are getting bigger to, among others, mechanize the agricultural process (on average 700 acres in America).  By and large, we are producing only two mono crops: soy beans and corns.  These crops are very narrowly tailored, lacking genetic diversity (GMO's).  To keep them alive, tons of chemical sprays are necessary each year along  with tons of synthetic fertilizers as the soil is void of microbes.  Plants cannot absorb nutrients from the soil unless first digested by microbes I learned.

These are bigger issues than mites, and we are focusing on a very hyper-specialized issue, which forces us to lose sight of the larger issue.  All these activities are not happening in ecological isolation as they impact on all pollinators, in general, and honeybees, in particular.  The focus of industrialized farming is not to feed the hungry since 38% goes to making fuels and another 38 goes to feed the animals.
