In this video, Ph.D. Zac Lamas presents research claiming we have been measuring varroa population on the wrong bee, and as a result, our wash data using nurse bees is inaccurate for most of the year. His research indicates that varroa actually reside on the adult drone population while phoretic and only more to workers when the drone population diminishes in the fall.  

If his data is correct, it could help support the almost universal observation of a late-season varroa surge.
