Page 106-107 of Koeniger, Koeniger, Ellis and Connor does say there is uneven mixing of sperm in the spermatheca for quite some time after the queen begins to lay. They reference Franck et al 1999.
Whether a queen can control the size of egg she's laying is the subject of current research. There is no definitive answer and I don't totally believe the published results yet. I'm waiting to hear about the proposed mechanism.
