Yep, that sounds real reasonable.  On the flip side I know of a whole PhD thesis based on museum insects where the clear conclusion was several species, not just sub species.  Then DNA and other molecular methods came along and all those species became one species again.  Species, not even subspecies.  Or how about the bird case where several widely separated birds were all called one species based on morphology and along came molecular methods and now there are several species?
