I had wondered if it is the water itself that is the stimulant.    In the
spring we often have a few good days for pollen collecting followed by poor
weather.   It's not uncommon to see bees out foraging for water on rainy
days that are just hardly warm enough for them to fly.   Perhaps in bad
spring weather, water to dilute their honey stores becomes the limiting
factor for brood rearing in spells of bad weather
